To me, personal style is important, but the sole definition is that it's things I enjoy, and that is ever-changing.
This year I'm leaning much more 70s. Big square glasses, facial hair, trucker caps, and so on. It's a bit corny but that's exactly what makes it fun. I also finally embraced socks with shorts, athletic stripes and all. Two years ago these would have been outside of my style wheelhouse.
Part of style, like you said, is exploration and growth. To me, it's self-expression. I like my style but it would be boring if I just stuck to whatever some dude on the internet said is acceptable.
Like shorts, for example. I still see that archaic “shorts are for young boys” nonsense being parroted around, but I think it's just that men are often self-conscious about showing their legs. Too bad for them I guess. I get to stay cool and explore all the fun variations that are out there.
I might even get into the super short athletic type with the contrasting trim. Might be outside my comfort zone, but at least I'm not beholden to the so-called rules and can try them if I want to. Would I look like a slutty summer camp counselor circa 1978? Probably, but as long as I'm following my curiosity and having fun that's all that matters.
My father and grandfather say, “Dress for the person you want to be. Wear what fits well and feels comfortable. Style is the outcome of knowing yourself (values).”

I think the more you try to define and protect your personal style the easier it is to stop having any fun with clothes. Feeling obligated to also broadcast all that online doesn't help matters either. I think the best thing I've ever done for my personal style was disconnect myself a bit (or a lot at times) from also sharing every single thing I wear on the internet.
I’ve been in Brittany France during the heatwave. This area is much more casual, so I did bring my Chacos. (Coloradans must own a pair, it’s law). I didn’t care if it’s a bad fashion shoe lol. It was 104, no ac and lots of walking. Survival mode. Paired with my bigger Peplord shorts, I was ready for Hugo Spritz and oysters.
